THE LIBRARY

The library's collections relate mostly to Norway and to other central Oxford County towns. Photocopy equipment is available and copies can be provided at a nominal cost. Reference letters are welcome, but e-mail services are not available at this time.

Newspaper Archives

The weekly Norway Advertiser Democrat and the Oxford County Democrat, dating from 1850 to the present, are on file and available for research. There is a nearly complete file of the Youth's Companion magazines, a weekly from that late 19th and early 20th century.

Maps

The maps drawers contain an assortment of maps, old and new, including some Sanborn maps of the village in the early 20th century. These were done for insurance agents, and indicated each building in outline and construction. Other maps identify the residents of certain old buildings. There is also a bird's eye view of the village in the 19th century.

Genealogy

Excellent resource materials, besides the weekly papers, include area Town Histories, Vital Statistics, and area Cemetery records, Family Histories, Marriage and Death Records.

Civil War

The bound records from the Maine Adjutant General's office for the Civil War years is available for research. There are also photographs, artifacts, histories, and letters. The unique booklet, "Civil War Memories of Geo. W. Whitman," is published by the Society, and sells for ten dollars.

Norway Writers

Several writers of prose and poetry lived in Norway. The most celebrated is C. A. Stephens, a prolific writer of stories for young people about the turn of the last century. His stories about life on the farm in Norway have been republished for our nostalgic enjoyment.
